BBC's 'Tonight's The Night' Visits Bexhill College

Bexhill College was recently featured on the BBC’s surprise entertainment programme ‘Tonight’s The Night’. The BBC had been searching for the largest Art facilities in the area in order to pull off their big surprise.

Producer Tracy Burns met with Bexhill College staff back in May and asked them to be involved in a surprise ‘hit’ on John Barrowman’s show which was aired on Saturday the 30th July, BBC1 at 18:30.

The show features a number of celebrities working alongside John Barrowman to make the dreams of some outstanding people come true.

Local schoolgirl, Lauren, was nominated to appear on the programme by her mother due to her outstanding fundraising efforts for charity where she raised over £75,000 for Spina Bifida. Lauren is a keen artist and was told by her art teacher (who was in on the surprise) that she had won the chance to spend the day with the ‘notorious artist’, Felix. What she didn’t know was that eccentric Felix was secretly TV Presenter and One Show host, Matt Baker in disguise.

The BBC crew arrived at the College early in the morning and began setting up the hidden cameras and microphones while Matt was being disguised by a professional make-up artist. The whole process took approximately 6 hours to set up and it was then time for the young girl and her friends to arrive for their art class.

While the art class was taking place, Bexhill College staff and the BBC crew hid away in a second classroom and watched the whole surprise unfold on monitoring TV’s.
Once Matt had revealed that he wasn’t in fact Felix but was from John Barrowman’s show ‘Tonight’s The Night’, the children were utterly overwhelmed. Lauren was then told that due to her outstanding Charity fundraising efforts, she would now fulfil her dream of meeting star of Glee, Matthew Morrison, who plays Mr. Schuester.

Saturday night’s episode revealed that she didnt just get to meet the star, but got to sing with him on his tour stage too!
