Fair Trade Bunting Record Breaker
Info Updated December 2011
The need to support Fair Trade products is essential in this day and age, a fact that the Textile Students of Bexhill College understand and support. Fair trade gives the guarantee of a fair price, healthy and safe conditions for the people who grow the product and insists on a sustainable environment for production.
On Monday the 14th November Bexhill College was visited by Jack Docherty from the Bexhill Fair Trade Committee. The reason for Jacks’ visit was to present the Bexhill College Textile Students with a certificate, in recognition of their contribution to shattering the Guinness book of world records for creating fair trade bunting; the final length of bunting measured 3,427.92 metres. On March 13th 2011 Bexhill Town’s contribution encircled the whole of the De La Warr Pavilion. This included the Textile Student’s contribution. The bunting was created to draw attention to injustices in the cotton growing and manufacturing industry.
As well as promoting awareness of the need for Fair Trade products, the textiles technology students study ethical and environmental issues surrounding the cotton industry, and this fun activity supports their knowledge and understanding of these issues. The College students have also previously voted to support Fair Trade through the selling of Fair Trade foods in their Refectory at the College.
As well as creating the bunting to promote awareness of Fair Trade, the Textiles students also put on a Fair Trade fashion show in collaboration with Bexhill’s Fair Trade Committee. This year it will return by popular demand and be held in the College Refectory on the 23rd of March, and tickets will be available from the College at a later date.
Textiles Tutors Nancy Nelson and Aimi Phillips are very proud of their students and look forward to seeing you at the fashion show!
