Why Should You Take This Course?
This course provides an opportunity for students to study an exciting and continually changing industry. The travel and tourism industry provides a wide and varied range of career options. The course provides an insight into the various factors and issues that are currently affecting the industry. Students also learn valuable skills in how to deal with customers in a variety of different situations, providing them with valuable transferable skills.
In year 1 of the course, you will complete the following units of work. This combination of units will provide a thorough foundation for further study of travel and tourism in the second year.
Unit 1 - Investigating the Travel and Tourism Sector
Unit 3 - The UK as a Destination
Unit 4 - Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
In the second year of the course you will complete the following unit -
Unit 2 - The Business of Travel and Tourism
This unit is closely related to business studies and gives you the opportunity to present a small business start-up case using a variety of skills including cash flow forecasting and marketing.
You will complete 2 further units, which could include Long Haul Destinations, Working as an overseas Holiday Representative and Marketing in Travel and Tourism
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed using a variety of methods including written coursework assignment tasks, case study work, verbal presentations and participation in a wide range of role play scenarios. Your final grade will be Pass, Merit or Distinction. There is no requirement to take any exams.
Are there any special expenses?
Part of the course involves visiting a travel and tourism related business to enable you to evaluate the customer service.
What could I do next?
The course gives you the knowledge and skills required to take up a range of careers in the travel and tourism industry such as working for an airline as cabin crew or working overseas for a tour operator as a holiday representative. It also gives you a range of transferrable skills such as the ability to use your initiative and to deal effectively with customers, providing access to a range of career options such as marketing and product development. You will also attract UCAS points allowing access to a wide range of university courses such as Tourism Management, Event Management and Marketing.
