This week, Year 9 pupils from St Catherine’s College and Cavendish School took part in Make It Count Day at Bexhill 6th Form College. The event allowed the pupils to develop their numeracy skills through a range of practical, problem-solving activities.
Andy Pritchard, Head of Politics, Economics, Business & Law at the College said:
"We are keen to ensure that the college vision of ‘Outstanding College, Outstanding Opportunities’ is expressed not only to our current students but to our potential students as well. It was a pleasure to work with both the staff and the pupils of St Catherine’s College and Cavendish School. We are aiming to promote creative and stimulating approaches to teaching numeracy skills. We believe our approach interests and engages learners, giving them the confidence and skills to succeed in using mathematics in future work and everyday life."
The event aimed to give pupils the confidence to contemplate studying subjects that incorporate the use of quantitative skills, such as Geography, Psychology and Economics. Pupils also gained exposure to the facilities and resources that students studying at a specialist sixth form college benefit from.
There was positive feedback from pupils who attended with comments including:
“We had a good time and we want to come here in the future.”
“We enjoyed the general atmosphere and the creative activities.”
“The maths lesson was fun as it related to our lives which is a change to normal maths.”
“The day was very well planned and the teachers were very friendly.”
