Two of the best college teams in Sussex faced off in the under 19 league cup final where Bexhill took on Varndean College, who are in association with The Russel Martin Football Academy. The final was held at the Sussex County Ground in Lancing.
Bexhill started the game very well, creating chances from the get go. In the opening 20 minutes, Gregg Bennett was proving to be a handful for the Varndean's right back, with Jordan Uba coming very close to scoring. As the game entered further into the first half, the score started to even up despite Bexhill's initial dominance. Varndean fashioned three saves from Bexhill's goalkeeper, Baily Chesire, and Bexhill responded to this with Leone Gravata hitting the bar from a corner. Then Chesire made a rare mistake which lead to Vardean's striker scoring a goal against the run of play.
The second half started with both sides equally matching each other on the pitch. Bennett had the first clear chance, but headed over the crossbar whilst being challenged by the keeper. With about 20 minutes to go, Varndean doubled their lead. Bexhill's management tried to get them back in the game by making two substitutions. Bexhill came close to scoring several times with Gravata hitting the crossbar again and Dan Hull striking the post. Both Josh Barrett and Matteo Lombardelli also had their shots saved by Varndean's keeper.
Unfortunately, it was not to be Bexhill's night and Vardean won 2- 0 although the game was played in the right spirit until the final whistle. First team coach Rob Wratten commented, "The Bexhill players have exceled this year and it was a fitting climax to play in the County Final. The lads had given their all, growing stronger as the season progressed. Although I am disappointed with the result, we can take great pride in our performance and look forward to next seasonĒ.
