Last November, Bexhill College students entered the Juvenes Translatores competition, which is an annual translation contest for students attending secondary schools or colleges in the European Union (EU). It is organised annually by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) to find the best young translators in Europe and a tough contest allowing only one winner per country.
Although we did not win, Languages A Level student, Simone Ondrovic, was singled out by the contest markers for showing remarkable skill. Simone was sent a special mention certificate, commending her for the quality of her translation, which was from German to Slovakian. She also received a £10 voucher from the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department.
“I felt really happy because I would never imagine that I could get a special mention from Juvenes Translatores competition because the whole UK was taking part in it. It gave me a lot of self-confidence that I actually can understand a foreign language and translate it into another one and give to it the same sense.”
