Bexhill College bring home the Wilkinson Sword

The South East England team won the AoC Sport UK National Championships for the second year in a row, bringing home the Wilkinson Sword! The occasion was made even better with Bexhill College student, Joshua Bennett, and staff member, Adam Hurley, being selected as student and staff captains respectively for South East team.

Teams from Kent, Sussex and Hampshire compete throughout the year in regional tournaments and all the winners of their respective sports combine to make the South East England Squad. Bexhill College made up the South East England table tennis and volleyball team. Once again, Bexhill College were the only College from the Hastings and a Rother area to have teams qualify.

Bexhill College's table tennis team, consisting of J. Bennett, R. Heselden and C. Koenig, topped their group beating Wales, North East, London and East Midlands. They went on to face Eastern England in the semi-finals winning comfortably, which put them in the final against North East, where they played for gold or silver. Despite beating North East in the group stages, the opposition raised their game in the final and South East ended up in second place overall. It is a fantastic achievement winning sliver at nationals, going one up on last year's bronze.

Bexhill College's volleyball academy qualified for the National Championships for the second year running, which is a great achievement considering the academy was only formed two years ago. The volleyball academy consists mainly of students from our international programme; the team consisted of two Italian players, four Slovakian players and a UK student. Last year, the academy finished 5th in the UK. This year, the women's team reached the semi-finals putting them up against reigning champions South West. The team gave it their best shot but lost 2-0, meaning they went in to the bronze medal play offs against London. The bronze medal match was close right to the end, with Bexhill finishing the tournament in fourth place overall. A great achievement for the academy's second year and going a place higher than last year's team. The team will be looking for medals next year.

The College is extremely proud of their sports teams' continued success regionally and nationally. Any current Year 11 students interested in joining one of our sports academy should contact Academies Director, Mark Linch (marklinch@bexhillcollege.ac.uk), for more information.
