Bexhill College Table Tennis Academy student Josh Bennett represented England at the Hungarian Junior Open last week, held in Szombathely.
This was Josh's first full England cap for England Schools. The 17-year-old from Polegate competed in the under 18 boys singles, doubles and team event for England.
In the group stages of the boys singles, Josh won 2 out of 3 of his matches ensuring he went through to the knockout stages. He lost to highly ranked Bilal Hammache of France 3-1 but beat Austrian, Christian Friedrich 3-2 and American, Alexander Aponte 3-0.
In the round of 128, Josh had a fantastic win over world ranked Abdel Rahman of Egypt 4-1. This put Josh in the last 64 where he went out 4-1 to the eventual winner and the number 3 seed Koyo Kanamitsu of Japan.
In the team event, playing alongside England number 1 and 2 Tom Jarvis and Luke Saville, (who both play full time abroad) the team beat Austria 3-0 with Josh picking up a good singles win. However, they were to go out to Belgium in a close fought match that finished 3-2, with Belgium eventually taking the runners up spot.
Bexhill College are extremely proud and supportive of Josh in his achievement representing England.
