Why Should You Take This Course?
Textile Design is a highly creative Art and Design course which will enable you to create expressive visual and tactile artworks by selecting and manipulating fibres and fabrics.
Course content
Year 1 - The year has an emphasis on the experimentation and exploration of materials, techniques and textile processes and you will develop an understanding of print, dyed stitched and constructed textile techniques. You will develop a practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of how ideas and meanings are conveyed through images and artefacts in different styles and traditions. You will research a range of artists and designers responding to their work and ideas in visual and written form producing an extended, exploratory project.
Year 2 - The emphasis of this year will be on developing and extending existing creative skills. You will be encouraged to develop a more independent approach to the subject demonstrating continued critical understanding, supported by integrated written engagement with the works of artists and designers to inform and develop work which has a personal significance into a major in-depth, practical and theoretical investigation.
How will I be assessed?
Unit 1: Personal Creativity Enquiry (100%)
Unit 3: Personal Investigation (60%)
Unit 4: Externally Set Assignment (15 hours): (40%)
Are there any special expenses?
You will be asked to provide materials such as basic sewing materials, pencils and sketchbooks as well as contribute towards the cost of specialist or large quantities of materials you may choose to use in your projects. Some trips such as visits to museums and galleries are compulsory.
What could I do next?
The course will prepare you for further study at Foundation, HND/Degree level. There is a wealth of diverse careers which include Fashion and Textile Design; Knitwear, Woven, Printmaking and Surface Pattern, Interior Design, Costume/Theatre Design, Fabric/Clothing Technology, Textile Art, Restoration/Conservation, Accessories and Millinery.
