Why Should You Take This Course?
If you want to gain a Level 3 qualification in science in combination with other subjects, then this may be the course for you. If you would like a portion of your qualification to come from coursework, then this course is more suitable than A Level science courses. The first year units studied can lead to a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science. If you progress onto the second year it will lead to
a BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science. This is equivalent to an A Level.
The Certificate course consists of two units, with a further two units studied in the second year. In the first year all students will study Principles and Applications of Science and Practical Scientific Procedures. In the second year students will study Scientific Investigation Skills along with one optional unit.
Some of the possible units studied include:
• Physiology of Human Body Systems
• Genetics and Genetic Engineering
• Applications of Inorganic Chemistry
• Applications of Organic Chemistry
• Astronomy and Space Science
• Electrical Circuits and their Applications
How will I be assessed?
In year 1 you are assessed internally through a portfolio of work that the students create. Work will include a range of practical and written skills. The other unit will be assessed through an external examination.
In the second year, one unit will be internally assessed but the other will be assessed through externally set practical tasks which the students will complete over a number of sessions.
All units must be successfully completed in order to obtain either the Certificate or Extended Certificate.
What could I do next?
The Certificate can lead to a career in a range of applied scientific disciplines such as forensic science, applied biology, applied chemistry and applied physics. It allows progression onto applied science courses at University.
