English Language and Literature

Entry Requirements:
At least 5 GCSEs graded 9-4 or A*-C. Grade B/6 is preferred in English.

Why Should You Take This Course?
If you love the English language and are interested in understanding how it works from every angle then this is the course for you. This two year course explores the way the English language is used in a variety of contexts; we will investigate the use of language in both literary and non-fiction texts, looking at drama, poetry and prose.
We analyse the way a writer uses both literary and linguistic techniques. You will become familiar with a literary and linguistic meta-language. We will explore the English language in use and in action in non-literary contexts like conversation, speechmaking, informal discussion and spontaneous speech. It is the mixture of literary and linguistic analysis that makes this a unique course and different from any other.

Course content
In the first year you will study the following texts:
Margaret Atwood - The Handmaid's Tale (prose)
Carol Ann Duffy - Meantime (poetry)
An anthology of non-fiction texts focused on Paris
In the second year you will study the following texts:
Shakespeare - Othello
Tennessee Williams - A Streetcar Named Desire
F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby
Khalid Hosseini - Kite Runner

How will I be assessed?
You will have two exams and a coursework essay (3,000 words).

Are there any special expenses?
Students are recommended to purchase their own set texts. The course is well recognised for higher education and provides a strong all-round qualification in English.
