Why Should You Take This Course?
A strong background in a wide range of physical and life science subjects can provide an opening for many careers and Higher Education courses. Successful completion of this course will also provide evidence of good personal organisation, the ability to meet deadlines and a strong ability in the practical sciences.
The Extended Diploma contains 13 units studied over two years. They cover a broad spectrum of topics across Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Electronics. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to three full A Levels. In the first year, all students will study the same 7 units, providing them with a good grounding in all sciences. In the second year, students will study a range of different units.
Some of the possible units studied include:
• Physiology of Human Body Systems
• Genetics and Genetic Engineering
• Practical Chemical Analysis
• Indutrial Chemical Reactions
• Astronomy and Space Science
• Electrical Circuits and their Applications
How will I be assessed?
Over the course of the two years, four of the units will be assessed through external exams, where one of which is an open-book style exam. The rest of the 13 units will be internally assessed through written work in a portfolio and successful work is awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction. All internal assessments are subject to external verification and all units must be successfully completed in order to obtain the Extended Diploma.
What could I do next?
The Extended Diploma is an exciting opportunity for students wishing to follow a career in a range of applied scientific disciplines such as forensic science or radiography. It allows progression onto a number of courses at university including Applied Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
