Why Should You Take This Course?
If you are enthusiastic about acting and theatre, then this course is for you. You need to like working creatively in teams and enjoy sharing and experimenting with ideas. You need to have a willingness and independence in creating work and in developing both your practical and academic skills. This course can appeal to performers, directors and designers or those interested in how to create new theatre.
Component 1: Drama and Theatre (written exam)
Knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre
Study of two plays
Analysis and evaluation of the work of live theatre makers
Component 2: Creating Original Drama (practical)
Process of creating devised drama
Performance of devised drama (students may contribute as a performer, designer or director)
Devised piece must be influenced by the work and methodologies of one prescribed practitioner
Component 3: Making Theatre (practical)
Practical exploration and interpretation of three extracts, each taken from a different play
Methodology of a practitioner must be applied to extract 3 which is to be performed as a final assessed piece (students may contribute as a performer, designer or director)
Reflective report analysing and evaluating theatrical interpretation of all three extracts
How will I be assessed?
Written exam - 3 hours and open book: 40% of A Level
Working notebook (40 marks), devised performance (20 marks): 30% of A Level
Performance of extract 3 (40 marks), Reflective Report (20 marks): 30% of A Level
Are there any special expenses?
Theatre trips will be arranged each term as part of the course. Outside of this you should be attending the theatre regularly.
What could I do next?
Drama is a well-established A Level subject, which is excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue their interest or ambition at university or drama school, or for anyone who intends to progress to any other degree course. In recent years students have progressed to drama school, as well as university drama degrees. It could lead to a career in acting, direction or dramaturgy.
