Drama and Theatre Studies

Entry Requirements:

At least 5 GCSEs graded 9-5 including English at grade 4 or above and either Dance, Drama or Performing Arts.

Why Should You Take This Course?

This course is for anyone enthusiastic about acting and theatre and will appeal to performers, directors and designers or those interested in how to create new theatre. You need to like working creatively in teams and enjoy sharing and experimenting with ideas. You need to have a willingness and independence in creating work and in developing both your practical and academic skills.

Course content
Drama and Theatre (written exam)

  • Knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre
  • Study of two plays (texts can be used in the final exam)
  • Analysis and evaluation of the work of live theatre makers

Creating Original Drama (practical)

  • Process of creating devised drama
  • Performance of devised drama (students may contribute as a performer, designer or director)
  • Devised piece must be influenced by the work and methodologies of one prescribed practitioner

Making Theatre (practical)

  • Practical exploration and interpretation of three extracts, each from a different play
  • Methodology of a practitioner which is to be performed as a final assessed piece (students may contribute as a performer, designer or director)
  • Reflective report analysing and evaluating theatrical interpretation.

How will I be assessed?
Written exam - 40%
Working notebook and devised performance - 30%
Performance of extract 3 and reflective report - 30%.
Are there any special expenses?
Theatre trips will be arranged termly as part of the course and outside of this you should attend the theatre regularly. During the course you will be expected to buy a number of play texts.

What could I do next?
This A Level is excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue their interest at university or drama school, or for anyone who intends to progress to any other degree course. Previous students have progressed to drama school, as well as university drama degrees. It could lead to a career in acting, direction or dramaturgy.
