Entry Requirements:

Five GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including Maths and English.

Why Should You Take This Course?

The purpose of the Level 3 Technical Qualification is to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills needed to progress into skilled employment or higher-level technical training.

Course content You will complete 750 hours of work placement in a variety of settings to demonstrate your skills and competency with children. The theory work will consist of a ‘core’ set of underpinning knowledge, concepts and skills. You will also gain specialist training covering occupational or industry-specific skills. Topics will include:

  • Understanding the education and childcare sector from ages 0 to 19
  • Child development
  • How to support children and young people’s education
  • Safeguarding, health and safety & wellbeing
  • Understanding and managing behaviour
  • Observing and assessing children and young people
  • Equality and diversity
  • Special educational needs and disability
  • English as an additional language
  • Working with parents, carers and wider families
  • Working with agencies and services that support children, families and carers
  • Reflective practice and other forms of professional development.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including externally set examinations and an employer-set project. There will be knowledge-based essays and direct observations at work placements to demonstrate competency for the industry.

Are there any special expenses?
There will be a cost to travel to work placement, plus a DBS check and uniform (needed for work placement).

What could I do next?
You will learn the skills and qualities needed to work with children and build a portfolio of evidence, to support your transition to higher education or employment.
The course gives you a license to practice so you could work in a variety of roles including an early years practitioner, nanny, teaching assistant or an individual needs assistant. You can also go on to higher education to study a variety of subjects, including Primary Education to become a primary school teacher.
