Entry Requirements:

At least 5 GCSEs graded 9-5, a 6 in Maths, plus grade 6/6 or above in Science. If taking separate sciences, a 6 in Biology is required, alongside a 6 in Chemistry or Physics.

Why Should You Take This Course?

Biology covers various topics, from developments in medicine to the study of the environment. It is a rapidly developing science with recent advances in fields such as gene technology. It is essential in overcoming major concerns such as antibiotic resistance, vaccine development and food production to meet the needs of an expanding population.
Biology compliments other subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Maths, PE, English and Sociology.

Course content
In Year 1 you will explore the theories and principles of living systems. The course covers biological molecules, cells, organisms exchanging substances with their environment, genetic information, variations and relationships between organisms.
Ideas from the first year are developed and expanded in Year 2. Year 2 covers energy transfers including photosynthesis and respiration, organisms responding to internal and external changes, genetics and populations, evolution and ecosystems, and the control of gene expression. In addition, you will complete required practical investigations, which will develop laboratory skills, techniques and problem solving.
You will develop independent study skills and take part in group work and discussions. This will teach transferable skills, which will help you develop the ability to interpret data, investigate facts and draw conclusions.

How will I be assessed?
There will be 3 exams at the end of the 2 years. Throughout the course you will complete 12 required practicals and work towards a practical endorsement.

Are there any special expenses?
You will be required to purchase your own lab coat, safety goggles and lab book.

Biology is an essential course for anyone considering a career in medicine, veterinary science or dentistry as well as subjects such as conservation and ecology.
It is a good choice for forensic science, pharmacy and nursing. It also leads to zoology, marine biology and many other disciplines.
