Entry Requirements:

At least 5 GCSEs graded 9-5 including English and Maths at a grade 4 or above. A 4 or above in Sciences is preferred.

Why Should You Take This Course?

Do you want to study a subject that encompasses many of the earth’s most pressing issues? Do you enjoy problem solving and practical science? If so, study Geology! Geology is an interesting subject that is taught through theory, practical work and field trips. Geologists are amongst the most employable in these times of economic change as a result of the need for resources in areas such as energy, waste and water management.

Course content
The course covers:

  • Geological Investigations
  • Geological Principles and Processes
  • Geological Applications including Geohazards, Geological Map Application and Geological
  • Evolution of Britain
  • Practical Endorsement: An assessment of practical competency. Students undertake four days of fieldwork and complete experiments in the laboratory to pass the practical endorsement.

How will I be assessed?
The course consists of three examined components and a practical endorsement; the examined elements have a strong focus on analytical and evaluative skills throughout.

Are there any special expenses?
Students will be required to undertake a residential trip and local day trips.

What could I do next?
You could study a range of subjects at university, including Geology, Civil Engineering, Mining Geology and Hazard Management. You could also complete work-based training with organisations in these sectors or use this valuable qualification to enter employment.
