Bexhill College Football Academy, in partnership with Eastbourne Borough, returned to their winning ways away to Ebbsfleet United on Wednesday 26th February. Following on from their success in the County Cup semi-final, a much-changed side made the trip to Ebbsfleet looking to secure their first league win in 6 games. During a game which was contested in blustery conditions, Eastbourne defended well during the first half against the wind to get to half time 0-0.
The second half followed the pattern of the first period, with the wind affecting the passing of both sides. Midway through the second half, Captain Matt Astle finished well after being sent clear by a Louis Elliot through ball, in what was the only real piece of genuine quality football during the game. Eastbourne pushed for a second with Astle testing the keeper from long range and Jacob Roberts standing firm in the Eastbourne goal, with a couple of good saves to deny Ebbsfleet an equaliser. Full backs George Christodoulou and Josh Richardson both had strong games with Astle leading the team well in midfield. The final score was 1-0 to Eastbourne.
Football Academy Coach, Sean Noble, was pleased with the result stating "the players really dug deep today in testing conditions. Our captain, Matt Astle, has shown this year that he has a habit of grabbing important goals, which proved the case again today however, without the combined effort of the players around him the win would not have been possible.”
Player of the Match went to Josh Pool, for a disciplined performance breaking up several Ebbsfleet attacks and keeping the side ticking over, using possession wisely.
