Bexhill College Football Academy Qualify for Menís County Cup Final

Bexhill College, in association with the Chelsea Football Club Foundation, defeated Buckswood on penalties to qualify for the Sussex County Cup Final. A dramatic encounter was finally brought to its conclusion when Sonny Chambers saved the 8th Buckswood penalty to see Bexhill progress 6-5 on penalties.

The first half saw Bexhill dominate following a tight first 10 minutes creating several good scoring chances. Louis Elliot forced the break through reacting first to a blocked shot to place the ball past the goalkeeper. Dan Blackmore had a good chance saved by the Buckswood goalkeeper following excellent set piece delivery from Matthew Astle.

The second period continued in much the same vein with Leone Gravatta striking the Buckswood bar from fully 30 yards. Buckswood equalised late in the second half following confusion from a free kick delivered in to the Bexhill box. Jacob Roberts thought he won the game late in normal time slotting past the Buckswood goalkeeper only to have the effort ruled out for offside.

Into extra time and Bexhill again started the brighter looking dangerous from set pieces through Blackmore and Daniels. Louis Elliot struck his second goal of the game in similar circumstances to his first reacting first to a blocked shot. Bexhill again had chances to extend the lead further before sloppy defending left a Buckswood forward clear on goal to slot past a helpless Chambers with minutes remaining.

The game finished 2-2 and Bexhill keeper Sonny Chambers emerged the hero of hour, saving two Buckswood penalties after seeing his own spot kick saved within the shoot-out.

Academy Coach, Sean Noble, praised his side for their attitude and application throughout the game. "We played with a high tempo and probably should have won the game in normal time. For the players to maintain their confidence and belief in their ability was great to see. We look forward to the Cup Final which serves as a great reward for an excellent bunch of players. It is impossible to single out one player for praise today, they all deserve great credit who are a pleasure to work with each week.Ē
