Bexhill College Football Academy progress to Sussex Cup Semi-final

Bexhill College, in association with the Chelsea Football Club Foundation, progressed to the Semi-final of the Sussex Cup following a 2-1 victory against Stars Football Academy on Friday 24th January. Following a disappointing result against Whyteleafe on Wednesday 22nd January, Bexhill returned to their winning ways against an organised and well-drilled opponent.

Bexhill competed well within a tight first half and were thankful to goalie, Sonny Chambers, who made a couple of important saves to keep the scores level. Midway through the first half, the deadlock was broken; Captain, Matthew Astle, struck his free kick through the visitors' walk, catching the Stars goalkeeper off guard, meaning he could only parry the ball into the net. The tight affair continued in the same fashion, with clear cut chances hard to come by, and would have led to Bexhill being disappointed to concede prior to half time to send the teams in tied.

Bexhill started the second half optimistically, and re-established their one goal advantage when Daniel Blackmore headed home from a Matt Astle free-kick. Bexhill weathered pressure from Stars in the final stages, and could have extended their lead with Astle and Jacob Roberts both wasting good chances.

Academy Coach, Sean Noble, was delighted with the performance and felt the victory was well deserved, commenting "Our organisation defensively was very good and the players have done themselves proud. Against good level opposition, we have shown that when at full strength we can more than match anyone we come up against.

Player of the Match was Daniel Blackmore, who was excellent in midfield, breaking up play and scoring the winning goal.

Attentions now turn to league commitments on Wednesday 29th January, when Bexhill face Welling United in the National Alliance league, before facing Buckswood in the Semi-final in February.

The Bexhill College Football Academy is also in partnership with Eastbourne Borough Football Club.
