Bexhill College in association with Eastbourne Borough Football Club suffered a 7-0 loss away to Carshalton Athletic on Wednesday. Bexhill returned to league action for the first time since September 2020 and endured a tough afternoon which had seen the players meet each other only two days earlier and also suffered from a number of withdrawals from the match day squad.
Despite the setbacks, Bexhill began the game in excellent fashion maintaining possession for long periods and forcing their opponents into mistakes through some aggressive pressing of the home side. Some wasteful finishing saw Eastbourne spurn 3 golden chances including missing an open goal which would have seen them take the lead and potentially change the flow of the game. As the first half progressed, Bexhill struggled to maintain the high intensity of their start and Carshalton capitalised on some individual errors to go into half time 3-0 ahead. The second half saw Carshalton dominate the and added to the score line with Finlay Holter in the Eastbourne goal making a number of impressive saves to prevent further damage.
Eastbourne coach Sean Noble commented “It’s not very often you come away from a 7-0 defeat with optimism, however after only meeting the players two days earlier and fielding a side containing nine 1st year players, there are several areas which are very promising. Once the players have trained more regularly together and we are able to impress our principles of football upon them I see the team being able to compete well throughout the season."
Impressive debuts from Ryan Moir in central midfield and Charlie Gibson, which was unfortunately cut short due to injury, shows that Bexhill have the players to compete in a tough division.
Player of The Match was awarded to Alfie Simons who delivered an impressive display on debut, full of energy and enterprise with no shortage of technical skills.
