Bexhill College Ladies’ Football Team associated with Chelsea FC Foundation drew 1-1 in a close game away to Thomas Bennett Community College. With some players out through injury and other commitments and the return of other players, no one knew what the out was going to be, nether the less the team were ready to go.
Straight from kick off it was a very close game with a lot of it being played in the middle of the pitch with some big tackles being made by both sides. At the 30-minute mark the first chance came with Ellouise winning the ball just wide of the penalty box and crossing it into Becky Simmons where her shot drifted marginally over the crossbar. This was soon returned in the 40th minute by an attack from Thomas Bennett forcing and unfortunate penalty against Bexhill making the score 1-0 to Thomas Bennett. After this event moral dropped for the final 5 minutes of the half, however with some strong defending from the Bexhill back line we were about to see out the rest of the half.
After the half time team talk the girls went out with a strong mentality to claw the game back. Much like the first half the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half was 50-50 with both teams coming out to try and win the game. In the 55th minute Bexhill were pulled down in the Thomas Bennett box resulting in an indirect free kick with Becky Simmons and Katie Young linking up for this. The initial kick was rebounded and then cleared by the defenders however Katie Young was able to connect with the ball beautifully on the volley to tie the game at 1-1 (even the opposition supporters loved and applauded the goal). This change in events gave Bexhill the motivation to go on to try and win the game. In the 64th minute Ellouise was able to run on to a through ball from Amelia but was millimetres wide of the goal. Shortly after this Bexhill were caught on an attack from Thomas Bennett, but the shot was amazingly saved on the line by Becky Thompson (GK). In the dying minutes of the game there was one more chance coming from Holly Carter which was again just wide.
Coach Cat Ruth commented, “I am very proud of the performances from all of the girls today who worked hard and never gave up. It was a very entertaining game to watch and seeing the applications from training being used in the game today is always pleasing for a coach to see”.
Player of the match was awarded to Becky Thompson, who delivered an amazing 90 minutes in goal including a great save off the line and saved the game more than once.
