Today, Year 9 pupils from St Catherine's College, Willingdon Community School and the Turing School took part in the annual Make It Count Day at Bexhill 6th Form College. The event allowed the pupils to develop their numeracy skills through a range of practical, problem-solving activities.
Ben Whittingham, Head of Politics, Economics, Business & Law, led the day and commented:
"We enjoy working with our partner schools on this important event each year. We want to extend the College ethos of providing outstanding opportunities to our wider community. We are aiming to encourage creative and inspirational approaches to teaching numeracy skills. We believe our methodology engages learners, giving them the confidence and skills to succeed in using mathematics in their everyday life, both now and in the future."
The annual event intends to give pupils the confidence to consider studying subjects that incorporate the use of quantitative skills, such as Geography, Psychology, Economics and Physics. Pupils also became acquainted with the facilities and resources that students studying at a specialist sixth form college benefit from.
There was positive feedback from pupils who attended, with comments such as: “The experience was fun and free." "Students seem to have more responsibility which I really liked.”
Bexhill College is looking forward to hosting this event again next year, offering more outstanding opportunities to a fresh new group of Year 9 students.
