Bexhill College 2nd XI Win SSFA U19 County Cup

Bexhill College 2nd XI took on Seaford Head 1st XI in the SSFA U19 County final at Lancing Football Club. Bexhill looked nervous in the opening moments of the game which gave Seaford the initiative, who started well, with their left winger causing the Bexhill defence lots of problems.

This positive start resulted in Seaford taking a well-deserved lead within 20 minutes. Bexhill responded well and grew into the game and equalised after an excellent cross from Ethan Howard was converted by Ollie Peterson.

The teams went into half time, with the final result still potentially going either way with the score at 1-1. Bexhill started the second half excellently and started to control possession more and created a couple of excellent chances, with Cameron Howard being denied 1 on 1 by a great save from the opposition keeper.

Seaford’s pace on the wings were still a danger for the Bexhill defence however, and Seaford spurned an excellent opportunity by hitting the post, only to have a carbon copy 5 minutes later and this time they took the chance, taking the lead 2-1 on the 80th minute.

Bexhill continued to show their never say die attitude which has been evident throughout the season, and this ensured Bexhill equalised in the last minute of the game with an excellent header to lob the keeper from Logan Copley.

The game went straight into penalties, with Bexhill coming out on top winning 3-2 after the first 5 penalties. The 5 Bexhill players to step up and take a penalty were Eric, Archie Sangster, Thierno Diallo, Logan Copley, and Cameron Howard. Special mention to the goalkeeper, Ethan Doidge, who also made two tremendous saves within the penalty shootout.

2nd team manager Ben Ferguson commented, “the final was an excellent game played in good spirit by two evenly matched teams and I couldn’t be prouder of the group of players involved today and throughout the season who have represented the college excellently and have consistently performed to a high level. However, the most pleasing aspect of the game and the season has been the togetherness and camaraderie within the group of players. This is definitely something that has made this season possible for the players. “

Player of the match was Jordan Pittam and this was a thoroughly deserved award. His energy, drive, and quality in the middle of the midfield has epitomised everything that is good about the team and Jordan deserved this award, not just for his performance in the final but his performances all the way through the season.
