Student's mask making mission

Bexhill College student Robyn Foster has been making face coverings which have been given to both students in the college as well as going to front line NHS staff

Robyn who is studying A levels at the 6th form College has been working with St Leonards makers as a team of volunteers, many of whom have learnt to sew just so they can help out with the project

Kind hearted benefactors donated sewing machines and materials to the group who have then turned the donations into vital PPE

Individually, Robyn has made over 4,000 masks and the total made by the group is now past the 25,000 mark. Robyn has donated 500 masks to the College to help students who don’t have one

Bexhill College operates a strict social distancing and safety policy. These include following a one-way system, using antiseptic wipes in classrooms as required by staff, temperature checking on arrival at the college site as well as wearing a face covering when in corridors and communal areas which is where Robyn’s work has proved invaluable

Robyn said “there are seven of us all under 18 who didn’t previously know how to sew and it’s been fun learning a new skill as well as being able to help the College and the NHS”

It’s not just the College and NHS who have benefitted from her selfless work, masks have also been donated to foodbanks, warming up the homeless and various community teams

College Principal Karen Hucker said “We were really pleased to be offered reusable face coverings to give to our students who need them to help them keep themselves safe. Wearing face coverings is a key part of the College’s approach to maintaining a safe educational environment during this pandemic. Robyn has shown significant commitment volunteering her services to such a worthy cause. Studying for 3 A levels isn’t easy and it’s great to see someone so busy giving her time up to contribute in such a way”
