Bexhill College 3-1 Defeat to Carshalton Athletic

Bexhill College in association with Eastbourne Borough Football Club and Chelsea Football Club Foundation suffered a 3-1 defeat to league leaders Carshalton Athletic on their return to action in the National Alliance Under 19 league. In a tight game with few clear cut chances Eastbourne more than held their own against a strong Carshalton side who went into the game on a good run of form. In a tight opening both sides enjoyed good periods of possession with Carshalton capitalising on a mistake from Eastbourne to take an early lead which was then doubled direct from a freekick mid-way through the second half. Eastbourne remained resolute in defence and began to grow into the game and deservedly halved the deficit 5 minutes before half time through Alfie Simmons who finished well from the edge of the box following Fletcher Holman’s run and cross.

The second half continued to be a tight affair with Eastbourne growing into the game enjoying greater periods of possession without troubling the Carshalton. Eastbourne nearly capitalised on a mistake from the Carshalton goalkeeper after he took too many touches and was closed down well by Holman who blocked his attempted clearance however the ball fell to  Carshalton defender with the goal empty who was able to clear.

Carshalton restored their 2 goal advantage with 20 minutes remaining with close range finish from a rebound following a smart save from Finlay Holter although this did not dampen the efforts off Eastbourne who continued to press for openings until the final whistle.

Academy coach Sean Noble commented, “I am very proud of the players efforts today against the league leaders, every player competed well throughout the game and provided a stern test to our opposition which on another day could have seen a different result. The players took on our advice to become more physical and the importance of competing for every ball which was very pleasing, my only disappointment was that we did not test the Carshalton goalkeeper enough during the course of the game”.

Player of the match: Herbert Ademola.

Led by example as captain and really inspired his teammates well with an excellent display in defence which provided the solid base required for the team to compete well with Carshalton.

Eastbourne team:

Holter, Tarrant, Martinaj, Duah, Ademola, Spice, Moir, Simmons, Taylor, Gibson, Holman.

Subs: Perry, Caicedo, Howard. E, Howard. C.
