Bexhill College 1st XI looked to bounce back from the previous week’s defeat with a tricky away trip to play Cardinal Newman’s 1st XI.
Bexhill started slowly, giving the ball away in dangerous areas in their backline and Cardinal Newman capitalised on this by pressing high up the pitch and winning the ball to go 1-0 up within the first 5 minutes. However, Bexhill College responded superbly to the early setback, getting a foothold on the game by improving their passing and decision-making across the team. Will Harley got Bexhill back into the game and quickly put them in front, before going on to complete a first-half hat trick that got Bexhill in control of the game, alongside a goal from Leo Groombridge, giving Bexhill a 4-1 lead at half time.
The football played in the first half was a credit to the players, who were moving the ball quickly and creating chances freely. The 2nd half started slowly again, with Cardinal Newman getting back into the game to make it 4-2. But Bexhill’s nerves were eased with another well-taken goal for Will Harley.
The Bexhill team started to relax again and put on a show for the remainder of the game. Sonny Walsh joined the hat trick club, giving him a reward for his excellent link-up play. The final two goals were scored by James Walker and Mal Scullion, giving Bexhill an impressive 10-2 win.
It was a complete performance from the team, with hattricks from the two centre forwards, creativity from the wide players, high energy from the centre midfielders, and a solid defensive play from the back line and goalkeeper.
