Employer Encounter – Animal Aid Visit to Level 2 Diploma in Culinary Skills

On the 12th May, Karin Reynolds and Mark White of Animal Aid came to the college to speak to the Level 2 Diploma in Culinary Skills students on vegetarianism and veganism and carry out a cooking demonstration, which the students then had to reproduce.

Animal Aid is one of the world’s longest established animal rights groups, having been founded in 1977. They campaign peacefully against all forms of animal abuse and promote cruelty-free living. Their vision is a world in which animals are no longer harmed and exploited for human gain but allowed to live out their lives in peace.

During the visit the students were given a talk on Animal cruelty in the animal farming industry and the benefits of a vegan lifestyle to personal health and the planet.  The students were given the chance to see a range of vegetarian and vegan alternative ingredients and also the chance to try some of them.

They then were given a demonstration in how to create a traditional meat dish using plant-based alternatives.  They then had to produce the same dish giving it their own twist and present the dish for evaluation.
