External Speaker – Trinity College University of Cambridge

On Friday 16th January, Trinity College, University of Cambridge, came in to deliver an hour-long workshop. The workshop introduced students to super-curricular skills and explained why they are essential for strong applications to top universities, particularly Oxford and Cambridge.

It explored what universities are looking for academically, how super-curricular activities (such as wider reading, lectures, work experience and independent exploration) support subject choice, personal statements, admissions tests, interviews and success at university, and how these skills demonstrate curiosity, independent thinking and genuine subject interest, beyond the curriculum.

Through modelling, discussion and subject‑specific examples, students practised tackling unfamiliar, multi‑step problems, explaining their thinking and identifying gaps in knowledge, especially in an interview context.

The session also highlighted admissions tests, effective personal statements, and opportunities to explore Oxford and Cambridge through outreach programmes. It finished with a reflection on how students can continue developing super-curricular skills independently.
