Flash Fiction

Once every fortnight, Bexclusive Magazine come together to create pieces of flash fiction inspired by the same prompt in ten minutes. This week’s prompt was, ‘He knew he must keep very still while he waited.’ This is what we wrote…

The Horror of Waiting by Stevie Adams

He knew he must keep very still while he waited. He could hear his wife calling out his name from downstairs. She was pacing around the rooms, calling repetitively. What could he do but stand and wait for her to find him? He heard her steps slowly edge closer. She was coming up the stairs, calling his name over and over. What did she want? His mind raced as he questioned every logical reason. He could hear the doors opening, as she slowly creeped up the stairs. She was calling out, in the same cold tone. His fate was set, all he could do was wait. His breathing got faster as he felt his heart beating out of his chest, faster and faster. How was this even possible? Her funeral was this morning- she had only been buried an hour.

Hunger by Lilli Drueckler

He knew he must keep very still while he waited. The Pacific Ocean licked the warmth from his feet while the sharp wind bit at his nose making his head cave into his knees. Small empty tugs pulled at the fishing line; nothing new but the bumps in the waves. Why did the tide bring empty hope?

Hide and Seek by Sofia Visco

He knew he must keep very still while he waited. A deafening silence reigned in the room but with one exception: a woman’s heavy steps behind the large wooden table under which the man was seeking shelter. Small drops of sweat descended from the man’s forehead, who kept his eyes shut and his hands clasped as in prayer. The woman looked around with great care, inspecting every corner of that dimly lit room full of dust and unused furniture. She looked everywhere, except under the large wooden table. The man was about to sigh with relied, then suddenly the tablecloth rose.
