TikTok Banned: Privacy Fears Spark Global Action

Alona Thomas and Lauren Griffen consider the pros and cons of TikTok

TikTok, the viral social media platform, was recently banned in the USA for under 24 hours. The company owned by the Chinese internet giant Byte Dance was prohibited due to security reasons.

The American president Donald Trump has now signed an order for a 75-day extension to comply with a law that ensures either a ban or sale of the app. Trump also said he may impose new trade tariffs on China if a deal with the platform is not confirmed. One of the possible buyers is a youtuber called Mr Beast who posted a Tik Tok claiming to apparently be on a private jet on his way to make an official offer to buy the platform.

Many influencers were shocked by Trump’s announcement as they could lose their livelihood. Tiktoker make-up artist James Charles said, ‘Tik Tok has genuinely changed my life.’ Many of these influencers fled to alternative Chinese App Red Note during the ban. Red Note users were unimpressed by the American influencers who only spoke English instead of Mandarin. This language barrier made it clear that influencers were going to find it difficult to create a strong connection with the new audience. This highlights some of the complexities of using social media in different cultures.

One of the issues that Trump is concerned about is that Tik Tok collects an excessive amount of data. A cyber security report published in July 2022 warns that they not only collect data like location and browsing history but also sensitive details such as device information, biometric data and more. Critics argue this is a real issue as this data can be accessed by the Chinese government. This has sparked arguments about data security and the mis-use of information gathered online leading to tighter regulations for Tik Tok.

Another issue surrounding Tik Tok is that it has faced accusations of censorship with some claiming that it selectively removes or restricts certain content especially concerning political or sensitive topics. This has led to concerns about the platform’s role in shaping the public’s view especially considering its heavy influence on children. As the platform continues to grow, these issues remain unsolved and a central point of discussion in social media’s role in modern society.

One final issue regarding Tik Tok is that it can spread misinformation. Due to the app’s algorithm which prioritizes engagement, false information can easily go viral. The rapid pace at which content spreads make it difficult for Tik Tok to monitor and regulate what is being shared and the platform has been criticized for not doing enough to prevent the circulation of harmful content.

Despite all these concerns we believe banning the app would overlook its significant positive impact. TikTok provides a platform for creative expression allowing millions of users to share their talent and even begin to start their careers. It has become a valuable tool especially considering education. Rather than banning the platform, we believe it would be more productive to focus on creating stronger safeguards that protect users while preserving the benefits TikTok can provide.
