A Level Modern Languages students recently entered the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, translating poems in French, Spanish, German, and Italian into English.
The competition, organised by Queen’s College, Oxford, received over 15,000 entries from schools across the country. Two of our students won the prizes for the best advanced-level translations in the South East: Marta Melkova in German and Emanuela Moia in Italian. This is a fantastic achievement – professionally translating poetry requires a combination of accurate language skills and creative flair in order to end up with a poem that works in the new language. The translations were highly lyrical and successfully conveyed the beautiful imagery of the original poems. Congratulations to both.
