Earlier this month, Bexhill College Creative Arts teaching assistant Gabe Jones was selected to represent East Sussex Scouts at the Coronation of King Charles III.
Having been through the different levels of the Scouting Association his entire life, Gabe started as a Beaver and progressed to an adult leader when he turned 18. He volunteers as a Cub leader in his hometown of Uckfield, where they teach young people skills for life. These skills range from camping, cooking, acting, and performing to teamwork and community skills.
As County Youth Commissioner for East Sussex, Gabe represents young people in our local communities, striving to ensure that everything they action as a county is youth-led and focusing on gaining the voice of under-18s in Scouting. This means that young people are at the forefront of event planning and decision-making to steer their journeys.
On the day of the Coronation, the Scouts woke early at 2.30 am to collect their breakfast and lunch for the day, before changing into their uniform. The groups of Scouts arrived in London at 5.30 am via coach, and following a short briefing, they began working with the public. During the event, Gabe and 500 other Scouting volunteers were spread across several locations in London, supporting the event by helping people navigate the city and enjoy the day. Some groups of Scouts were in St James’ Park and Buckingham Palace. Gabe was stationed in Hyde Park alongside around 100 of his fellow Scouts, wayfinding and supporting the public with anything they needed. After spending the day in the capital, the Scouts departed back to the campsite where Gabe was also asked to take photos of the UK Youth Commissioner Team.
Reflecting on his experience, Gabe said:
‘It was truly amazing to hear people say things like “Thank goodness the Scouts are here!” and “I saw the scarf and uniform and knew you would be able to help!”. It was great to meet so many new people and build stronger relationships with those I already had the pleasure to know. The whole experience will stick with me for my entire life.’
