Work-Related Learning: Culinary skills students visit South Lodge Hotel

On Friday the 6th of January 2023, the Level 2 Diploma in Culinary Skills Catering students visited South Lodge Hotel to look around the facilities, chat with the head chef, and experience the luxury of a high-class hotel and restaurant. At first, the students had an apprehensive approach to the location due to the old-fashioned nature of the property. However, as soon as they got involved with many of the duties on site the attitude and engagement quickly extinguished doubts they had about the place.
 
During the trip, the students participated in various activities, including:
– A tour of the hotel and access to the various styles of rooms they have
– A tutorial showcase in the kitchen from the head chef demonstrating how to make part of one of their signature dishes from their menu: Black pasta Egg yolk and black pudding Ravioli with sauce gribiche, watercress puree, and fresh British Wasabi
– Looking around the hotel’s plant-based kitchen located in the spa area and having a go at making mocktails
– A tour of the spa and a chance to try out the rest and relaxation area and meditation chairs
– A buffet lunch provided by the hotel and a talk from the head of their catering academy about progression opportunities after Level 3.
 
Overall, the students found great enjoyment in getting to experience a new environment in the hospitality industry and networking with seasoned staff. We would just like to thank all the wonderful staff at the South Lodge Hotel who helped make this such a memorable experience for the students.
