Work-Related Learning: Economics WEX in the 21st Century

Four Year 13 Economics students took part in some supervised work experience: a joint initiative of the Royal Economic Society and the University of Sussex. Completed in person at the University Campus and remotely, Alan Anil, Ka (Elizabeth) Chan, Peter Nagle, and Oliver Hayward were trained by Professor Gabriella Cagliesi and her team of expert academics to learn research techniques and get to grips with the brief.

During the first week, they worked on producing a video on the contribution of an economist belonging to one under-represented category in economics. Students then worked on data during the second week to identify and measure gaps in economics (BAME and gender) and theories of discrimination within this field.

The students’ research will be presented at Department events and via the Royal Economic Society network and events.

Professor Cagliesi praised the students by saying “This is a great video. Well done. You researched the material, added personal reflections, and went beyond expectations”.

Economics student, Ka Chan’s comment was equally positive about the experience; “Under the guidance of Gabriella, I had the opportunity to delve into the realm of behavioural economics, expanding my knowledge beyond what was covered in the classroom. Collaborating with fellow students who shared a passion for the subject matter was both enlightening and stimulating where the project’s focus on inequality in our economy was thought-provoking, bridging theory and real-world issues. By studying the impact of inequality on consumer behaviour, we gained valuable insights into the socio-economic challenges faced by individuals and communities. I am sincerely grateful to have had the privilege of working in such a stimulating environment, guided by an experienced professor. This experience has undoubtedly equipped me with invaluable skills and knowledge that will serve as a solid foundation for my further education”.
