A Level Modern Languages students recently entered the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, translating poems in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Mandarin into English.
The competition, organised by Queen’s College, Oxford, received over 16,000 entries from schools across the country. Two of our students were awarded a special commendation for the best advanced-level translations in the South East: Chloe La Marca in French and Vittoria de Jesus in Italian. Chloe and Vittoria are both international students who have been studying at Bexhill College for a year.
This is a fantastic achievement – professionally translating poetry requires a combination of accurate language skills and creative flair in order to end up with a poem that works in the new language. The translations were highly lyrical and successfully conveyed the beautiful imagery of the original poems. Well done Chloe and Vittoria!
