Today, Saturday the 11th of February 2023, Bexhill College is recognising some of the Women and Girls in STEM on this international day of celebration. We spoke to some of our students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects to shine a spotlight on them, their passion, and their plans for their future.
First-year student Eryn is currently studying for a Diploma in Engineering alongside A Level Physics and Mathematics. Additionally, she takes part in the extracurricular enrichment group “STEM Girls”, a group of students that share their enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and further their skills and knowledge outside of the classroom. “STEM Girls is great because we explore a range of sciences as well as having the opportunity to meet new people in STEM fields and encourage other students to join”.
“I knew from a young age, maybe four or five, that science was my passion, and my parents and family encouraged me throughout the years to progress into science” Eryn noted that she loves space, which introduced her to basic physics at an early age. But it was comic book characters like Tony Stark that led her to discover engineering. “My dad has a degree in physics, and he has always been my role model, inspiring me to be interested in science and pursue a similar field to him. I don’t think I’d be the person I am today without him. Even the way I think and learn has been influenced by him which has allowed me to pursue my interest in science”.
We asked Eryn if she had any advice to pass on to prospective science students, and she explained: “You don’t need to be the next Einstein to enjoy science, you just need to have a want and willingness to learn. Science has a reputation to be very difficult and overbearing, but in reality, it can be incredibly fun and rewarding”.
After finishing her studies at Bexhill College, Eryn described her next steps: “I want to expand my knowledge in engineering through a degree apprenticeship, learning how to use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and additive manufacturing. I’m mostly excited to be able to work in a field which I am passionate about, whilst learning, earning, and getting qualifications at the same time.”
