Today, Saturday the 11th of February 2023, Bexhill College is recognising some of the Women and Girls in STEM on this international day of celebration. We spoke to some of our students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects to shine a spotlight on them, their passion, and their plans for their future.
India, a second-year student, is studying A Level Physics, Biology and Mathematics. During her interview, India mentioned: “In secondary school, science subjects were my favourite lessons, particularly biology and physics. I enjoyed learning about how there are so many things that affect us in day-to-day life and how they worked, like how we breathe”.
When asked if she had a role model that inspired her to pursue science as a career, she commented: “I’ve never really had any specific role models. What made me want to continue to study sciences was hearing about all the scientists that have dedicated their lives to help us have a better understanding of the world; it’s very inspirational”. For girls who are not sure about if they should study sciences, India gave some advice from her experience in this field: “Science can be very hard, but like all subjects, it needs time and effort to become an expert. With this in mind, sciences are very rewarding, and the knowledge you gain from them can be applied to so many things that you may not even realise.”
To conclude, we asked India what her next steps would be once completing her A Level exams this year. “I’m hoping to go to university to study physics and astrophysics. I love space science because there’s so much to learn about it and it’s forever changing all the time.”
