STEM girls enrichment aims to promote Engineering and Physics to young girls in society. As a start, last week the STEM girls organised Engineering and Physics activities and invited KS3 and KS4 girls from St. Richards to participate in the activities to motivate the students and make science come alive. In Physics, the KS3 girls had a chance to learn about telescopes used in Astrophysics and viewed distant objects via various arrangement of lenses and via a reflecting telescope. Newton’s 3rd law of action and reaction was also investigated using balloon-propelled cars and ramp walkers, which gave an insight on the effect of gravity.
In Engineering, the students had a hand at 3D printing, laser cutting, and aerodynamics. They also used catapults and hydraulic cranes to study energy transformations and pressure transfer in liquids.
