Jem Wilson, an economics student at the college, has won a prestigious national essay competition hosted by the University of Warwick Economics Society as part of its Warwick Future Economists programme.
Jem’s essay was selected as the overall winner after an impressive competitive process. A total of 263 entries were submitted, with just 30 essays shortlisted by the society before being passed to leading academics for final judging. Jem received a £100 prize, and his work will also be published in the next edition of the society’s magazine, Assumptions.
Participants were invited to tackle one of three challenging questions with Jem choosing to explore “how governments should balance the goals of reducing inequality while promoting economic growth”. His essay impressed judges with its clear analysis and thoughtful argument on a complex and important topic
The University of Warwick Department of Economics praised the work, saying: “For such a broad and challenging area – namely the balance between inequality and economic growth – this essay presents a remarkably concise narrative that covers the key ideas while still allowing the writer’s personality to come through clearly. Great work, well done.”
Jem hopes to continue his studies by reading Economics at university having developed a passion for economics in the classroom. Keen to explore the field further, he independently discovered the competition and chose to enter on his own initiative exemplifying his ability to communicate complex ideas with confidence and insight – a decision that has now led to national recognition.
