Visit to Churchill College, Cambridge University

On Tuesday this week, a group of 10 students visited the University of Cambridge’s Churchill College in Cambridge. They were invited as part of the university’s outreach work which encourages a diverse range of students from State education to apply to the university. There were seven colleges in attendance, all from the South East.

The students enjoyed an introductory talk about the Cambridge University application process which was very encouraging and informative. This was followed by a Q&A session with current undergraduates in which our students confidently posed a number of relevant and articulate questions to the panel. We were then taken on a tour of the college campus by one of the undergraduates. It was very impressive and the students particularly enjoyed seeing the library and the accommodation. The morning ended with a tasty and generous lunch in the college dining hall.

After lunch, the students had a whistlestop tour of the famous Cambridge Backs where they could see the iconic King’s College and Trinity Hall set on the banks of the river Cam. We walked across the Garret Hostel Bridge to watch the punts go by and were delighted to find a family of fluffy signets asleep on the river bank. The students were excited by the impressive cobbled streets and Tudor architecture. One student said she felt as if she had stepped into a Harry Potter or Northern Lights novel. We walked through the vibrant and bustling town centre passing by many of the colleges. The students were quite inspired by the sumptuous green spaces and glorious spires.

It was a day full of enthusiasm and aspiration. We look forward to our students making their applications in the autumn. They are a real credit to the college.
